Exhibition
Touch me, Touch me is a new exhibition of contemporary textiles featuring the work of three emerging artists, Vrunda Darji, Evie Hassiotis and Adele Sliuzas. Inspired by the innate sensory qualities of textiles, each of the artists have created work that highlights texture, colour and form.
Evie’s machine embroidered works are designed to be touched, and audiences are welcome to interact with them. With a background in mixed media and painting, Evie has repurposed painted canvas as a fabric to embroider onto. The works are built up with brightly coloured layers of thread and wool, creating an expressive abstract image.
Vrunda comes to the exhibition with experience as a textiles artist as well as in fashion and apparel design. Vrunda’s hand embroidered works are deeply rooted in the rich legacy of Indian embroidery, particularly Kantha quilting, an age-old craft that has been practiced for generations in Bengal and Bangladesh. Her work blends tie dye, applique, hand painting, block printing and graphic elements to create intricate and expressive contemporary works.
Adele’s hand woven works incorporate hand spun and dyed wool. Using the overshot technique traditional to Lithuanian weaving, these works connect with Adele’s cultural heritage. The large hand pieced quilt features a design of tulpės ir saulė (tulips and the sun), and speaks about the comfort and safety of home.
