Artist Talk
An ancestral diary, and a King Island artist residency in 2024, has led Klavins to develop a new moving image work 'across' (2025).

A diary found in the Tasmanian Archives, was written by her sealer ancestor who lived on the island with a Tasmanian Aboriginal woman and their family in the 1830's. The diary describes their practice of ‘making a smoke and raising the wiff (flag)’ to trade wallaby skins with passing ships. This led Klavins in 2022, to experiment with silk, and nylon, and create her first 'Windsignalling instrument', which she filmed during stormy weather from her local Henley Beach.

Her most recent moving image work 'across', is a collation of short 'messages' actually filmed from various places referenced in her ancestor's diary. Klavins attempts to 'signal' from Henley Beach, over to King Island, and back. This performative act, whilst seemingly futile, enables her to conceptualise and re-present new ways of thinking and deciphering the troubling and complex histories of her ancestor's lives.

Whilst she does not personally or culturally identify as a First Nations person, Klavins work often addresses her ancestral history and the impact of colonisation.
