I have long found that the act of throwing on the pottery wheel has a meditative quality to it; often I find myself in another place or lost in thought about something else while my hands and body go about creating the form that has been set out. There is often a sense of calm that I feel while I am going about my throwing because of this.
Of course there are moments when all of that is far from my mind and my attention is solely on the task at hand, especially during a challenging throw. Soon enough though, a rhythm is found and the body takes over again.
It is a time I use for contemplation, interrogation, exploration, reflection, inspiration. By navigating this inner world of mine I find there is a way to process and attempt to understand and find meaning in the outer world. A handy tool to have in the world we live in today.
MEDITATIONS is a body of work that has been designed with the intention of further exploring that inner world. These forms are all wheel thrown, some challenging, some unorthodox. Some of them easy and comfortable. All are made with the intention of engaging further with this concept and hopefully elicit a similar experience in the viewer.
MEDITATIONS will occupy Gallery 1 at Hahndorf Academy.
