The butterfly is a graceful symbol that inspires joy and hope. On its own, a butterfly is beautiful, but in a group butterflies are magnificent. The butterfly symbolises that together we are better than alone.

Art is a wonderful way to combat isolation and loneliness by giving people of different backgrounds a shared opportunity to express themselves. Bringing butterflies together into combined artworks seemed the perfect fit for Southern Cross Care’s 2026 SALA program, proudly supported by the Southern Cross Care Community Foundation.

This year’s artists include Residential Care residents and their families, Respite Care clients and their carers, and members of the ICreate social art class who created thousands of butterflies.

While each butterfly is different, together they form collective artworks that reflect belonging and community. Connecting the framed artworks is a separate installation of butterflies, crafted by families and carers.

Together at the Torrens shows what individual members of a community can achieve when they come together to connect.
