This photographic series centres on a single tree—quietly standing, season after season—known to the artist as The Sentinel.
Captured across changing light, weather, and time of day, the work explores how one constant presence can hold many moods: from fiery silhouetted sunsets to soft, mist-laden mornings. Each image reveals a different character of the same tree, transforming it from a simple landscape feature into a symbol of endurance, memory, and place.
Contemporary landscape photography often reflects our emotional and personal connection to the environment, inviting viewers to reconsider how they relate to familiar spaces. In The Sentinel, this connection becomes deeply personal—documenting not just a location, but an ongoing relationship between artist and land.
Through repetition and observation, Michelle Gray invites viewers to slow down and notice the subtle shifts in light, atmosphere, and feeling—reminding us that even the most familiar scenes can hold extraordinary presence.
