Cedric Varcoe
Cedric Varcoe believes that art is a pathway to connect people to their origins and to share the message of how his ancestors created this land and everything that lives in it to be respectfully taken care of. He gets inspiration through the observation of the country and the stories told by his grandmother and family members about the creation of areas such as the Lower River Murray, the Lower Lakes to the Coorong, over to Encounter Bay and Kangaroo Island, as well as other regions in South Australia.

On this exhibition he represented different episodes from the Kaldowinyeri - Creation Time, depicting elements from all areas where Ngurunderi, Nepeli and Waiyungari made their journeys to create all landforms and living beings we know today.

Cedric was born in Adelaide in 1984, his family is Narangga, from Point Pearce on the mission on Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, and Ngarrindjeri from the area along the southern parts of the river Murray, the Coorong in southern coastal South Australia. Cedric has been painting since he was very young, inspired by watching his family paint and by the stories from Ngarrindjeri country and their culture.

In 2008, Cedric completed a mural in one of the cells at the Port Pirie Police Station, hoping to inspire young people who have been arrested, to try to help them to have a better outlook on life.

Cedric has won multiple local awards such as the Port Augusta ‘Malka Art Prize’, in 2010 and 2014, and has been nominated in 2018 as NAIDOC SA Artist of the Year. He has been exhibiting since 1997.
In 2015 Cedric received a grant from Arts SA for professional development workshops with Better World Arts.

He has teamed up with Better World Arts, which has supported him to display his works in galleries across Australia and to sell his work globally. Together, they also developed a series of innovative point of sale artifacts, ranging from printed ceramics to handbags, featuring his unique designs. As a result, he is able to support his work and his family as a proud, contemporary Ngarrindjeri artist.
