A new body of work by emerging multi-hyphenate creative Alyssa Powell-Ascura.

A fresh approach to exhibiting, the artist have immersed themselves in experimentation in order to bring their vision to life in an accessible, interactive manner. This exhibition will be delivered in hybrid mode - accessible digitally online through the artist's website and throughout SALA Festival month, will be shown at exclusive secret location(s). The physical location(s) will be revealed through clues on the artist's website and other platforms.

The body of work highlights a performance by the artist, in the act of Arnis/Kali/Eskrima - the national martial arts of The Philippines, wearing traditional Filipiniana attire. The juxtaposition of the performance and the attire is a subtle but firm reminder of Filipina resistance and leadership through pre-colonial times and to this day. As an emerging artist with Filipino ancestry, it's important to the artist to ensure that they produce works that highlight their own personal narrative as a Filipino-Italian-Australian. These identities have complexities and nuances that the artist associate with and proudly bring with them into their creative work.

Alyssa Powell-Ascura is a finalist in the 2023 City Rural Emerging Artist Award for artwork in this exhibition.
