John Dow was born in Adelaide and has been drawing and painting since childhood. This has developed into a lifelong interest in visual art as a participant and observer. He has studied art at the Adelaide Central School of Art under the tutelage of Sophie Dunlop; at BAPEA Art School with principal lecturer Peter Bok; at the Josef Felber Art School and is currently mentored by Kate Kurucz at DuthyART.

John’s art practice focuses primarily on still life painting in oil. John’s work reproduces familiar everyday objects items found at home or secondhand in Vinnies or the Salvos, coupled with flowers from the garden or the Adelaide Parklands. Many of the objects are set up in front of a backdrop of an open book, coloured cardboard or historical landscapes. One recurring motif is seen in the use of spheres to create a sense of distance in the composition despite the narrow surface the objects are resting on. John also reuses favourite vases, figurines and other objects in multiple pictures.
